MaiBiz all about encouraging a sense of entrepreneurship

A drum roll and loud cheering welcomed judges at the MaiBiz Challenge recently held at Edgewater College.

There was a sense of excitement as it was a time to announce the results after three days of brainstorming and coming up with business ideas.
Facilitator of MaiBiz, Mark Douglas had cleverly managed to introduce students to financial literacy and a sense of entrepreneurship in a fun way.
Sponsored by Maori Women’s Development Inc, MaiBiz is an entrepreneurial and business workshop run in secondary schools throughout New Zealand.
It also teaches students about essential life skill and prepares them for the time they step out of the school gates.
Students of Edgewater College were asked to come up with a business idea with regards to something they all enjoy—food. How it could be served, presented or delivered.
The winning team Shooting Star Inc came up with a unique idea of an Edi-bubble.
Borrowing the idea from the Ming dynasty of China in the summer months, Shinguen Mochi was used by people as a small water bottle and refreshing confectionary treat. A healthy alternative to plastic water bottles, the Edi –bubble is eco-friendly as it contains a range of tea flavoured and fruit infused water, including fruit pieces inside to satisfy hunger pangs.
One of the judges rounded up the three-day business event saying: “There is more to business than what you see when you open the door. Also learning to buddy up with people you don’t normally hang out with was a new experience for all of you. As you all know in the real world, you don’t get to work with your friends.”
Mr Douglas said: “Even if one of you comes up with a small business idea and sets up business in the future, this exercise would be worth it.”
