May 05, 2015 A Career Experience By Amanda Kelso, Y13 During the holidays, I was grateful to experience something that only a few people discover. Hidden in a small town called Bell Block near New Plymouth, is a small institution called PIHMS (Pacific International Hotel Management School). Myself and 17 other people from around New Zealand and one girl from Japan, travelled to the institute for a four-day course. We had no idea what we were in for! We learnt what they do; experiencing campus life, having some fun in and around the city but mainly learning what happens in the hotel industry and the vital information that we needed to know. It turned out to be the most amazing experience I have ever had, and I was able to practice what I possibly could be doing as a career next year. And I met, bonded and talked with people either lecturing or studying on campus. It helped me gain some real insight into all aspects of hotel management and what it’s like to work in the industry. I couldn’t have done all this without help from the school and the Gateway program. They helped fund me to travel and stay on site where I developed skills and gained information for my further studies. Thank you to Mrs. Bayley and Mrs Blasé for introducing me to the course and for organising my transport and accommodation. I recommend as many students as possible go and experience this institute. You can gain a lot more than just hotel management from it.
