Student Stories

Matha Thay - Cambodia

Just like everyone else, I first arrived in New Zealand with a sense of eagerness to try new things. My homestay mom and sister, who is a fellow EWC international student, welcomed me warmly the moment I landed with my dad. We spent the next couple of days touring a bit around Auckland’s fine suburbs. It was amazing and once it was time to drive my dad back to the airport, it was rather bittersweet however; I won’t lie and say I cried. I was still in that stage where I was just filled with adrenaline to be independent and do things.

Fast forward to the first day of school (not the two day orientation), I quickly learned that here, in EWC, everyone is nice. The teachers, staffs, students… Frankly, everyone. I got along with my buddy and her friends really quickly. They showed me around school and it was just amazing.

In, EWC, you get to choose from quite a wide range of classes so, being able to take the class you like or that catches your attention won’t be hard. It wasn’t hard at all for me. I got to take 5 whole classes that really held my attention as well as had the opportunity to have each class everyday. The teachers are super supportive and helpful. They encouraged me to ask questions, make mistakes, learn from them and work with the other students in class, who I might add are also super friendly.

Though, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Just like everyone else with their first time studying abroad alone, following that adrenaline rush of eagerness and excitement, is the sense of doubt and homesickness. What if I made the wrong choice? What if I fail my classes? What if no one likes me? Yes, it is quite as scary as it sounds. No, it’s not permanent. From my homestay and the International Student Dept. staff, I received a humongous amount of support that got me through it.

To the people reading this to see if they should come and study in New Zealand, I hope I didn’t scare you off with the last paragraph. Yes, it’s hard but you’re not going to have to be alone when you come across that stage. Support is simply everywhere. All you need to do is ask. It’s that easy. Besides, would you really let that much scare you off from New Zealand? I mean, this is one of the safest, cleanest and most beautiful countries in the world…

I am awfully content with my choice to come to New Zealand and Edgewater College. I hope you decide to give it a chance too.

New Zealand.

Edgewater College

Hi everybody, My name is Panchai Kruasupapong, my friends call me Pat, I’m 16 years old from Phichit, Thailand. I am currently studying year 11 at Edgewater College for almost 3 years. I would like to share some of my experiences to other student that intend to study at Edgewater College in New Zealand.

I chose to study at Edgewater College because my brother came to New Zealand 6 years ago and the school also have great facilities. My brother graduated from Edgewater College, went to Auckland University and graduated in engineering.  The teachers are very friendly and helpful. When I first came to New Zealand my English was not very good so my communication with others was really a challenge but thanks to the teachers and my friends, my english has improved quite a lot.

For the first one or two weeks when everything that I saw was new to me but I had some friends showed me around the school and how things work I am very appreciated for the helps. The International Department also does their excellent job, they always gets everything sorted for me and gave me some good advice.

In our class, there are many international students came from different countries. For the first year I met some Brazilian students and they were so excellent and lovely. I really enjoy the time at Edgewater College I made so many friends and had a fun time with them. The differences are the hard part for me at first, because we all have different way of doing things.

I really like the school system, the NCEA system, they give us a year to get enough credits to pass. You can gain credits from your works and external at the end of the year, which is completely different from Thailand. Recently, I have received awards from the school at the end of year 11. The awards was for ESOL, Design and Visual communication and most importantly, International student of the year. I did not expect any of the award but I am so proud of myself as so as my family. All and all I really had a great time in New Zealand and at Edgewater College.

New Zealand is well known as a peaceful and charming country with multicultural environment, the beautiful nature and a perfect place for studying.

Hi Everyone, My name is Nong Hai My, I am 17 years old from Tuyen Quang province, Hanoi, Vietnam. Currently, I am pursuing year 11 at Edgewater College I would like to share my study experiences with someone who intends to study at Edgewater College in New Zealand.

I had chosen to study at Edgewater College because it is a very good High School in Auckland with excellent facilities. The school uniforms are very unique and smart look. The teachers are very enthusiastic, friendly and helpful. When I first come to New Zealand my English is not very good but thank to excellent experienced teachers who have supported and helped me after few months my English has improved a lot. For the first two weeks at school when everything was new to me the senior students showed me around school and escorted me to every classroom they are very friendly I am very much appreciated for their help. The International Students Department also does their excellent job they always give me good advice and helping me whenever I need their help.

In my class, there are many international students come from different countries such as Brazil, Japan, China, Thailand and others. I really enjoy studying at this school I made a lot of friends from different countries and I had a great time to study with them. Specially, we had some outdoor activities such as swimming, and diving in Goat Island and visiting some beautiful places around Auckland.  Interestingly, every year the school organizes an International Dinner party for year 13 students and I am invited. Students are required to wear their traditional costumes and bring traditional food to share at the party. It is an amazing and enjoyable party that I have never attended before and I had great a chance to get to know more about different students. We have exchanged our cultures and traditional foods together and also we have learnt how to say “Hello” from each other in different languages.

New Zealand is known as a peaceful and safe country I believe the multicultural social environment and the beautiful natural environment will make it a perfect place for me to study.

At Edgewater College I could choose all the subjects that I wanted even Maori. Orientation was great and the International Department were always here for me if I needed them. During the holidays I went on a South Island trip, it was a great opportunity. I really liked all the outdoor education trips we did and the school trips. My favourite highlight was probably the surf trip at the end of the year. The other students were really nice and friendly and always talked to me and helped me if I needed it.
This is and extra bit of information about how great Edgewater is and we all love it here but this website can we really annoying.

Edgewater College is close to Auckland City and also not too big. You learn so much about the different cultures at Edgewater. Everyone was friendly and helped me if I needed help. The family I stayed with was so nice and friendly and it really felt like home there. I could feel that they cared about me and so I never felt alone or anything. They were amazing!! I joined the school basketball team and the rowing team and had a great time. I learned so much new stuff about other cultures and that is just really impressive. Just being in a foreign country makes you more mature and self-confident.

When I arrived at Edgewater College I was welcomed by staff and students who showed me around school and took me to meet my teachers. The local “Kiwi” students are lovable and likable, I made some friends with students of different nationalities and local kiwi students because we were in the same class. Studying in Auckland and at Edgewater College is the best thing because you’ll meet many cultures, a new school, new places, new and nice people and new friends.

My name is Yurina Harano. I’m seventeen years old and I’m in year twelve this year. I’m from Japan but I have been staying in New Zealand for about three years. I came to Edgewater College this year.

I really like Edgewater College because there are many school events. For example the school ball and a special culture day. These events were really exciting and the students also enjoy some clubs too. Some of those clubs include basketball, rowing and volleyball. I’m taking five subjects that include English at Level One, Maths Level 2, Textile Level Two, ESOL Level Two and Three. For English and ESOL I have the same teacher, his name is Mr White. He is really kind and helpful. I take the most enjoyment in Textiles, because if you like fashion you should take it.

At Edgewater College there are many students from different countries. I’m really interested in different cultures, so it is very exciting at the school. I’m really enjoying my homestay too. I have a host mother, a host father, one younger sister, three younger brothers, two cats and two dogs. There is also one student from Germany. I often play games, watch movies and we go to the beach, cinema and shopping centre with my host family. I really like Auckland. It has many fashionable shops, delicious foods and a lot of fun things to do. The countryside is really green.

Finally I’m really happy studying abroad at Edgewater College.
