Why choose Edgewater College?

Explore five reasons why you should enrol with us.

1. You want to succeed

Our academic results in NCEA over the last 5 years have shown that our students perform well.

Our students go on to university and graduate as engineers, doctors and lawyers. They do social work and go teaching, work for big companies and small in New Zealand and Australia and all over the world. In recent years they have won prizes and scholarships to prestigious institutions like Oxford and Cambridge.

We believe that what happens in the classroom is important. We make sure that your learning needs are met with innovative and dedicated teachers, modern learning strategies, a wide choice in subjects, and careful careers advice.

We cater to all strengths (and work on your academic weaknesses too)!

2. You want to explore the world

Edgewater College led the development of International Education in New Zealand. Over the last quarter century we have offered young people from all continents a unique, niche experience. We enrich their heritage and expand their horizons to include all cultures in our Pacific home.

Today, the students at our school come from over (x) different countries. Friendships formed at school may last a lifetime—and open doors for our students.

Our kiwi students study the languages of the world and have the opportunity to be part of affordable study visits to places like Tahiti and France and Japan. At the end of their time here, EC students can say they have “been there”. We make exchange arrangements for students, and host others from all over the globe.

3. You want to be in the limelight

Friends are really important. Positive personal relationships are a top priority for us, so that our students feel safe and supported no matter where they come from.

Students are central to our pastoral care system.  Our network of support begins with the form teacher and the Deans. Students can also check in with our well-qualified guidance counsellor, our school nurse, and our careers advisors. We have access to a social worker and can refer students to a local doctor. We have a well-run peer support network, and have trained teams so young people can help each other to safely navigate the teenage years.

Because we are small, our students have leadership opportunities that are often not available in larger schools. Students can be part of school shows, cultural events, and up-there sports teams that successfully compete with some of the largest schools in the country. When they succeed, our students have a chance to really be in the limelight. You don’t want to be lost in the crowd. At Edgewater College, you get a chance to shine!

Feel included in our school. We make a special effort to include students of all abilities, all cultures, in the programmes we offer. Students with special needs in the Sommerville Unit are involved in regular school activities where-ever possible.

5.  You want to be fully involved in student life

Get into Music.

Our Music Department offers an inclusive programme that is affordable and fun. Students can learn a new musical instrument, be part of a jazz band or a rock group, sing solo or in the choir, participate in a music tour or a school show, or generally strut their stuff at music festivals. Our bands are top-five finalists in Auckland competitions, and perform at school and out in the community.

Rowing is a top NZ sport

Rowing is a premium sport for New Zealanders. Our rowers are regularly out on the water every morning during the season. The discipline and fun in rowing has delivered great rewards: our rowers compete well in national regattas, make firm friendships, and get noticed for their dedication and commitment as well as their rowing prowess. Edgewater College rows out of the St George’s Rowing Club on the Tamaki Estuary. ‘

Become business savvy

Be part of our Young Enterprise Team. Our Economics and Accounting options include field-work. Our students participate in authentic learning activities that grow their awareness of the workplace and the skills they will need to succeed.

Have fun outdoors.

Year 12 and 13 students may select Outdoor Education as one of their subjects. Adventures include a 3-day sea kayaking trip and mountain biking in native bush. The subject focuses on leadership, team-work and communication skills, decision-making and life skills—and these skills are important for all employers. Go tramping, rock climbing, sailing, snowboarding, caving or surfing! It’s all included.

Dance, dance.

We celebrate who you are, and where you come from. The Edgewater Cultural Festival is an evening of student dance performances from all over the world. As well as Maori, Tongan, Samoan, Niuean, and Cook Island dance groups, students from Japan, Thailand, India and other national groups reflect their heritages in colourful style.

Be on the stage.

Edgewater College students take to the stage each year. Our school productions include both drama and musical classics. In 2015, our show is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Students from all year groups may audition. Students also participate in lunchtime song quests, karaoke sessions and quiz games.
